How Do I Get to Puebla, Mexico?

Puebla Map

The Puebla airport, Hermanos Serdán International Airport (airport code PBC), is located about 45 minutes outside of the city. There is a daily flight from Houston, Texas, as well as from other Mexican cities, primarily Mexico City.

From the Puebla airport, you would take a taxi (about US$15) to your destination. Europcar and Hertz also rent cars at the airport, although we really don’t think you need one.

The easiest (and least expensive) way – with many schedule and airline options – is to fly to Mexico City’s Benito Juarez International Airport (airport code MEX). From there, there are many ways to get to Puebla. Here are some options:

  • Take a bus. The cheapest (and least stressful!) option. Take the Estrella Roja bus directly from the airport to Puebla’s CAPU bus station or to the bus “stop” called 4 Poniente (both the same price, about US$20). There’s only one from the airport. If you arrive at the CAPU (in about two hours), take an authorized taxi (about US$7) to your destination in town. 4 Poniente is in town – really almost to the historic part -- but you will need to negotiate your own taxi. (Make sure you set the price before you get in. It should be around US$6.)
  • Take a taxi, or private car or shuttle service. Generally somewhere around US$125 one-way. You can arrange this in advance with some providers.
  • Have the school or hotel pick you up. This is really #2, for the same approximate prices.
  • Rent a car. You would probably want to arrange this in advance too. We don't personally find it so necessary, as public transportation and taxis are affordable and plentiful (and you can get anywhere on foot in Puebla’s centro historico), but it certainly affords some comforts. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National, Sixt, and Thrifty all rent vehicles at the Mexico City airport. Getting out of the city isn’t so obvious (you might want the GPS!), but most of the drive is on good toll highway 150.

Bus to Puebla
  • By Bus

The central de autobuses CAPU in Puebla is a couple miles north of downtown, so no matter where you arrive from, you’ll want to take an authorized taxi to your final destination.

There are numerous bus lines that serve Puebla. The majority take passengers to and from other central cities in Mexico, including Veracruz, Tlaxcala, and Oaxaca, although many go through Mexico City’s TAPO station.

  • Driving
Mexico has quite good highways between major cities. We especially recommend the cuota or toll roads. Be aware that many do not have lights, though; for that and general safety reasons, we suggest you drive only during daylight hours. Military checkpoints and heinously high speed bumps are both common. Stop for both!
